Hypercoagulation Testing

Hypercoagulation refers to thickened blood as a result from fibrin being deposited in small blood vessels. The increased blood viscosity impedes the blood flow and may lead to blood clotting.

When tissues do not receive sufficient blood, the cells are starved for oxygen and nutrients.

Research has found that hypercoagulation is a factor in many patients suffering from :

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS);
  • Fibromyalgia (FM);
  • Multiple Sclerosis;
  • Parkinson’s Disease;
  • Heart Disease;
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome; and
  • other chronic conditions caused by impeded blood flow.

The causes for hypercoagulation are assumed to be --

  • genetic defects in coagulation regulatory proteins;
  • viral, bacterial, and/or parasitic infections that trigger the continual production of thrombin;
  • trauma and severe emotional stress;
  • chemical exposures that trigger the coagulation process.

Research confirms that also cancer patients have an increased incidence of blood clots. It appears that cancer cells produce a protein that acts as a pro-coagulant.

Hypercoagulation Testing is performed through specialized blood tests, and if indicated, a comprehensive treatment program will be initiated at the Issels Medical Center.
